Wayne County has lost a cherished mentor and coaching icon with the passing of Danny Merritt, who peacefully left this world last night surrounded by his loving family. His death marks not only the loss of a dedicated coach but also a man whose deep faith and commitment to student-athletes left an indelible mark on the community.
Danny Merritt devoted much of his coaching career to Goldsboro High School, shaping the lives of countless young athletes through his leadership, mentorship, and passion for the game. However, his influence stretched far beyond one school. Over the years, he also made a lasting impact at Eastern Wayne High School, Rosewood High School, and Southern Wayne High School, touching the lives of students across the county.

More than just a coach, Danny was a mentor and role model, instilling the values of perseverance, teamwork, and integrity in his players. He found immense joy in helping students reach their full potential—not just on the court, but in life. His unwavering faith and dedication to uplifting those around him were evident in everything he did.
The Goldsboro High School community, along with the entire Wayne County area, will forever be grateful for Danny Merritt’s contributions.
