It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Donald “Don” Stuart Crowley, Jr., a cherished member of the University of Texas at Austin community, who died at his home on Monday, February 25, 2025, at the age of 57.

Born on April 15, 1967, in Orlando, Florida, Don was the eldest son of Donald Stuart Crowley, Sr. and Mary Judith McGowan Crowley. The family relocated several times—from Florida to Ann Arbor, Michigan, before settling in Austin, Texas, in 1977. Don attended Hill Elementary, Murchison Junior High, and graduated from LC Anderson High School in 1986, where he was actively involved in the band, wrestling team, and served as a Belle Beau.
He pursued higher education at the University of Texas at Austin, joining the ROTC and earning a Bachelor of Science in Human Ecology with a Minor in Architecture, Biology, and Facility Design & Management in 1990.
Don’s passion for aquatics led him to establish Aquaknow Aquatics, a business dedicated to promoting water safety with the mission statement: “The only sport that will save your life.” Through this venture, he trained thousands of lifeguards and swimmers, specializing in teaching adults new to swimming and children with disabilities. He also maintained an undefeated coaching record with the Canyon Creek Cyclone swim team.
Beyond his business, Don was deeply involved in various organizations, serving on the boards of the American Red Cross of Central Texas, Central Texas Water Safety Coalition, International Surf Lifeguards Association, and the National Drowning Prevention Alliance.
At the University of Texas at Austin, Don served as an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education. He was also an American Red Cross Instructor Trainer and a USA Swimming and Diving Coach. His commitment to promoting lifelong safe water activities was evident in his teaching and mentorship.
Students consistently praised Don’s teaching style, noting his passion, kindness, and ability to connect with individuals of varying swimming abilities. One student remarked, “I took swimming for a PE credit and Don is so nice and you can tell he loves what he does!”
Don is survived by his children, Caprice, Cruz, and Cia Crowley of Austin, TX; his mother, Judith Crowley of Cedar Park, TX; his brothers David, James, and John; and his sister Jeanne Marie. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Stuart Crowley, Sr., and his sister Suzanne Marie.
Don Crowley’s legacy is one of dedication to water safety, education, and community service. His contributions have left an indelible mark on countless individuals, from the swimmers he coached to the students he mentored. His commitment to promoting safe water practices and his genuine care for others will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the profound impact he had on the University of Texas at Austin community and beyond.
