Texas Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Murdering Girlfriend After Learning of Her Abortion
A 23-year-old Texas man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his 26-year-old girlfriend, whom he choked and shot in front of multiple witnesses after discovering she had traveled out of state for an abortion. On Monday, Dallas County Criminal District Judge Chika Anyiam handed down the life sentence to Harold Lavance Thompson for the 2023 killing of Gabriella Gonzalez, according to court records reviewed by Law&Crime.
Following a trial presided over by Judge Anyiam, a jury found Thompson guilty of one count of murder. He has been credited with 636 days of time served.
As previously reported by Law&Crime, the incident occurred on the evening of May 10, 2023, when Dallas Police Department officers responded to a shooting at a residence in the 800 block of Walton Walker Boulevard. Upon arrival, first responders found Gonzalez with multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tragic case has drawn significant attention due to the circumstances surrounding the crime. Thompson’s actions were reportedly motivated by his discovery that Gonzalez had traveled to another state to undergo an abortion.
The sentencing brings a measure of closure to a case that has highlighted issues of domestic violence and reproductive rights. Thompson will remain in prison without the possibility of parole.
