Carroll County Public School Teacher Dies by Suicide Amid Investigation into Child Sexual Abuse Allegations
Taneytown, MD – A Carroll County Public School teacher, Justin Rieger, 22, was found dead at Bollinger Park in Taneytown on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. The Taneytown Police Department confirmed that Rieger’s death was a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Rieger was under investigation for child sexual abuse allegations at the time of his death. He was a substitute teacher at Francis Scott Key High School and an evening teacher at Carroll County Outdoor School.

Investigation and Response
The Maryland State Police have taken the lead in the investigation, and authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat. The park remains closed until further notice.
The Carroll County Public School system and the Taneytown Police Department have extended their condolences to Rieger’s family and friends.
Rieger’s Statement
Prior to his death, Rieger posted a statement on social media, expressing his frustration and confusion regarding the allegations and investigation.
He denied any wrongdoing and stated that he had been treated poorly by the school administration and Young Life Carroll County, an organization
where he was a leader.
